UK walks, outdoors
and practical trip planning
Practical guides for UK walks, outdoor days and thoughtful trip planning, including packing, route choices, coastal walks and making plans that still work when conditions change.
The route and the detour
The plan is useful, but the detour is often better
Trips at The Perry tend to begin with research, a list and a plan, followed by enough flexibility to ignore part of the plan when something more interesting appears.
This section brings together city breaks, coastlines, walking, food, culture, road trips, quiet days and spontaneous detours. It is less concerned with declaring the definitive way to visit a place than with recording what was genuinely interesting, useful or memorable about being there.
Walking is the shared constant, whether the setting is urban, coastal or somewhere in between. Nature, golf and piano may also appear as evolving projects; books, science, technology and collecting as routes into new subjects.
The aim is a useful personal record, not an exhaustive guidebook.
Ways of looking outward
Places, practical notes and works in progress
A place becomes memorable through its small details as much as its landmarks.
Places and routes
Stories centred on the destination, the walk and the details worth remembering.
Practical notes
Research, timing, useful discoveries and what might be done differently next time.
Works in progress
Golf, piano and other hobbies where enthusiasm sometimes arrives before coordination.
Coastal artwork: original people-free illustration created for The Perry; it does not represent a specific real location.
Photography and privacy
The scene is the subject
Travel photography will focus on landscapes, architecture, food and the experience of place. Recognisable people will appear only when the exact image and its placement have been specifically approved and the necessary rights are recorded.
